The biggest living thing is a mushroom you can't see
In Oregon’s Malheur National Forest something is living across 2,385 acres—about 3.7 square miles—as one connected individual. It is a honey fungus, and almost all of it is underground, threading through the soil and into the roots of the trees.
For a few weeks each autumn, after the first rains, mushrooms push up at the base of dying trees. That is the only part anyone ever sees. The rest is the size of a small city, and it is eating the forest.
